The figures highlight a growing global appetite for spending digital assets in everyday commerce, even as physical card availability remains restricted in several key markets around the world due to a complex web of regulatory and logistical barriers.

The geographical distribution of early adoption underscores a fascinating dichotomy in the modern digital economy. While users in regions with volatile traditional banking systems or robust crypto communities are eager to bridge the gap between decentralized assets and traditional retail rails, the infrastructure required to issue physical payment cards does not always scale as smoothly as software.

Andrey Ilinskiy, head of Tangem Pay, shed light on these challenges in an interview, explaining that bringing a crypto-linked payment card to market is far more complicated than simply meeting consumer interest. It is not simply a question of where people want crypto cards, Ilinskiy told Cointelegraph, adding that it is where demand, regulation, banking infrastructure, and card-issuing requirements happen to line up, and today, those maps do not always overlap.

The insights from Tangem arrive on the heels of a major product milestone for the company. On Wednesday, Tangem officially announced its first physical Visa card designed for seamless in-store and online purchases, as well as ATM withdrawals. To mark the launch, the company has structured an initial release limited to 5,000 cards, allowing early adopters to test the capabilities of the new payment tool before a broader global rollout.

The newly introduced Tangem Pay card is tightly integrated with the user’s existing self-custodial wallet infrastructure. According to the company, users can fund the payment card directly from their self-custodial wallet. Furthermore, in the event that a card needs to be suspended or closed for security or administrative reasons, users retain the ability to move their funds safely back to their personal wallet, ensuring they never lose control of their underlying digital assets during the administrative lifecycle of the card.

This design philosophy addresses one of the most persistent hurdles in the consumer crypto space: bridging the gap between absolute self-sovereignty and the heavily regulated world of traditional fiat finance. Self-custody removes one major boundary, the company noted, emphasizing that there is no custodian standing between the user and their assets. However, Tangem pointed out the inherent friction that occurs when decentralized wealth interfaces with legacy systems, noting that when those assets enter a regulated payment network, another set of boundaries appears.

Tangem Delivers the Cards in Nearly 200 Countries, Excluding Only 20

Despite the regulatory and operational hurdles inherent in launching a global financial product, Tangem has managed to establish a wide-reaching delivery footprint. The company stated that it is currently able to deliver physical Tangem Pay cards to nearly 200 countries worldwide. However, logistical and compliance barriers mean that the service remains unavailable in roughly 20 nations.

Among the excluded territories are China, Russia, North Korea, and Palestine. Tangem clarified that these regional restrictions do not necessarily mirror the broader rules or laws governing cryptocurrency usage itself within those jurisdictions. Instead, the availability of a crypto-linked physical payment card is dictated by a multifaceted combination of Know Your Customer protocols, international economic sanctions, local banking regulations, and strict card-issuing compliance mandates.

The same conditions that can create demand for crypto as an alternative financial rail can make regulated card issuance more difficult, Tangem explained. In many regions where traditional banking infrastructure is heavily restricted, unstable, or subjected to stringent capital controls, citizens turn to cryptocurrencies like stablecoins or Bitcoin to protect their wealth and facilitate cross-border trade. Ironically, those exact same regulatory environments and risk profiles often make traditional financial institutions and Visa network partners extremely hesitant to issue physical payment cards tied to digital assets in those jurisdictions.

As the industry continues to evolve, payment providers are increasingly looking for ways to incentivize card usage and build loyalty among crypto-native consumers. In line with this trend, Tangem is introducing a cashback program paid out in Circle’s widely used USD Coin stablecoin. Under the new reward structure, eligible purchases will yield a 1% cashback rate for Basic users, while Plus users will enjoy an enhanced 2% cashback rate, providing a tangible incentive for holders to use their crypto for everyday spending.

Tangem plans to put its latest innovation front and center for the global fintech and blockchain community by showcasing the first physical Tangem Pay cards at the upcoming Token2049 conference in Singapore. The high-profile event is expected to draw thousands of industry leaders, developers, and investors, offering an ideal stage for the company to demonstrate how self-custodial wallets can successfully interface with global Visa payment rails.

Swiss cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider Tangem has revealed that more than 40% of its Tangem Pay payment volume originates from Latin America, while over 30% comes from the United States.
