This milestone successfully transitions planned protocol modifications into a live testing environment approximately one month prior to the network’s scheduled mainnet rollout.

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as the designated activation point for the NU7 upgrade—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The development team quickly followed up on the milestone, with Zcash confirming the successful deployment in an official post on social media platform X, verifying that NU7 is now fully live on the testnet and operating as intended.

The NU7 upgrade represents Zcash’s next major network evolution, introducing a series of foundational changes designed to optimize the blockchain’s performance, efficiency, and economic model. Among the most prominent adjustments included in the upgrade is a significant reduction in the network’s target block spacing. While the blockchain previously operated on a 75-second target block time, NU7 aims to drastically accelerate transaction confirmation speeds by lowering the target block spacing to just 25 seconds.

In addition to accelerating block times, the upgrade implements several crucial technical and economic shifts. NU7 formally disables version 4 transactions, a change that carries significant implications for certain legacy assets remaining on the network. Specifically, disabling version 4 transactions means that any ZEC cryptocurrency currently held within Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless users take proactive measures to migrate their funds prior to the full activation of NU7 on the mainnet.

The upgrade also integrates a newly designed Network Sustainability Mechanism. This feature is engineered to alter the economic dynamics of the blockchain by redirecting a designated portion of transaction fees back into future block rewards, thereby supporting the long-term economic stability and security of the decentralized network.

Following the initial deployment, the Zcash Foundation issued a statement noting that testnet operators and node runners should actively utilize the release candidate to evaluate NU7 under real-world conditions. This crucial testing phase provides developers, validators, and stakeholders with the opportunity to thoroughly assess the performance, stability, and security of the upgrade before committing to a mainnet activation path.

Zcash developers are scheduled to convene on Oct. 20 to review the performance data gathered during the testnet phase. Based on these findings and their hands-on experience with NU7 on the testnet, the development team will make a definitive, final decision regarding mainnet activation and establish the precise activation height. Current projections and development roadmaps point toward a targeted mainnet activation date of Nov. 5, assuming the testnet phase proceeds without encountering unforeseen technical hurdles.

Zcash has officially advanced to the next phase of its protocol evolution, activating its highly anticipated NU7 network upgrade on the testnet.
