The disclosure highlights distinct regional adoption patterns for crypto-linked payment solutions, even as physical card availability remains restricted in several key global markets due to complex regulatory and banking hurdles.

The statistics offer a clear window into how digital asset holders are attempting to bridge the gap between decentralized finance and everyday commerce. However, translating global crypto adoption into traditional, real-world card usage is far from straightforward.

“It is not simply a question of where people want crypto cards,” Andrey Ilinskiy, head of Tangem Pay, told Cointelegraph, shedding light on the logistical challenges facing the sector. “It is where demand, regulation, banking infrastructure and card-issuing requirements happen to line up — and today, those maps do not always overlap.”

The insights from Tangem arrive on the heels of a major product milestone for the company. On Wednesday, the Swiss firm officially announced the launch of its very first physical Visa card, designed to facilitate seamless in-store purchases, online shopping, and traditional ATM withdrawals. To manage the initial rollout and ensure system stability, the company has limited the initial release to just 5,000 cards.

The new payment card is deeply integrated with Tangem’s existing ecosystem, allowing users to fund the card directly from their self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet. Furthermore, the architecture of the product provides a crucial safety net for asset holders: if a user’s card needs to be temporarily suspended or permanently closed, their remaining funds can be moved smoothly back into their self-custodial wallet without being locked inside a traditional banking intermediary.

This direct connection touches on a fundamental tension within the modern digital asset economy. Maintaining control over one’s wealth through self-custody eliminates a major boundary by removing third-party custodians who stand between users and their assets. Yet, the moment those decentralized assets attempt to cross over into a legacy, regulated payment network, an entirely new set of boundaries and compliance requirements instantly appears.

Tangem is aiming to navigate this complex regulatory labyrinth while simultaneously rolling out incentives to encourage active usage. Alongside the card release, the company is introducing a cashback program paid out in Circle’s USDC stablecoin. Under the terms of the rewards initiative, eligible purchases will yield a 1% cashback rate for Basic users, while Plus tier users will receive an enhanced 2% reward.

Tangem delivers the cards in nearly 200 countries, excluding only 20

Despite the broad global ambitions of crypto payment providers, geographic realities continue to impose strict boundaries on international commerce. Tangem noted that it is currently unable to deliver physical Tangem Pay cards to roughly 20 countries worldwide. Among the jurisdictions excluded from the initial release are major economic and geopolitical territories, including China, Russia, North Korea, and Palestine.

Crucially, the company emphasized that these delivery and availability restrictions do not necessarily mirror the domestic regulatory rules governing cryptocurrency ownership or trading within those specific nations. Instead, a myriad of external factors dictates where a crypto-linked payment card can legally and practically function. Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering mandates, international economic sanctions, fragmented local banking regulations, and strict card-issuing compliance frameworks all work in tandem to determine the footprint of a crypto-linked financial product.

In many cases, the regions that experience the highest demand for alternative financial rails—often driven by economic instability, high inflation, or restricted access to stable traditional banking services—are precisely the areas where traditional financial institutions and international payment networks face the strictest compliance burdens.

“The same conditions that can create demand for crypto as an alternative financial rail can make regulated card issuance more difficult,” Tangem explained, underscoring the paradox that defines much of the intersection between decentralized assets and traditional fiat rails.

As the industry works to overcome these structural hurdles, stablecoin integration continues to emerge as a vital bridge for consumer adoption. Market observers note that initiatives such as stablecoin-backed rewards and bank-level protection frameworks are becoming increasingly central to how digital assets are utilized in daily commerce. Recent industry surveys indicate that stablecoin adoption could surge significantly if users are granted robust, bank-like protections when interacting with digital dollars on global payment networks.

Looking ahead, Tangem plans to put its newly announced product front and center for the global fintech and blockchain community. The company is scheduled to showcase the very first physical Tangem Pay cards at the upcoming Token2049 conference in Singapore, providing industry participants and prospective users with a firsthand look at how self-custodial wallets and traditional Visa infrastructure can operate in tandem.

Swiss cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider Tangem has revealed that more than 40% of its Tangem Pay transactions originate from Latin America, while over 30% come from the United States.
