The initiative represents a significant step forward in bridging the worlds of Bitcoin and decentralized finance, commonly known as DeFi, without requiring users to surrender custody of their primary assets to centralized custodians or rely on traditional wrapping mechanisms.

Under the architectural design of the proposal, users would lock their native Bitcoin directly into dedicated vaults located on the Bitcoin network. Rather than transferring or converting the underlying asset, the system issues a non-transferable token on the Ethereum blockchain that serves as a cryptographic representation of the locked collateral. This mechanism enables participants to leverage their Bitcoin holdings to borrow stablecoins on Aave, keeping the original BTC securely on its native blockchain while unlocking liquidity within the Ethereum-based DeFi ecosystem.

The newly submitted governance proposal follows a progression of preliminary steps that began earlier this year. Babylon Labs initially introduced the concept with an introductory submission on May 25, which laid out the foundational framework for a trustless Bitcoin vault integration on Aave V4. This initial filing was followed by a preliminary community temperature check vote that successfully passed on June 10, according to public statements and updates shared by Babylon Labs during its quarterly founders call for the second quarter of 2026.

As part of the current formal proposal, specific financial incentives have been outlined for the protocol governing body. The Aave DAO would receive the first $500,000 in qualifying annual revenue generated by the integration, aligning the interests of the lending protocol with the success of the Babylon Labs expansion.

The integration addresses a long-standing limitation within the decentralized lending market regarding how Bitcoin is utilized. Aave already supports loans against tokenized Bitcoin through established assets such as Wrapped Bitcoin and Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin. However, these existing wrapped tokens inherently rely on centralized or federated custodians to hold the underlying Bitcoin in reserve. This custodial arrangement introduces counterparty risks, as users must trust that the custodian will maintain a secure one-to-one backing and honor redemption requests without interference or security failures. By utilizing native Bitcoin vaults managed through cryptographic protocols, the proposed integration seeks to eliminate this reliance on third-party custodians.

As of Thursday, the proposal remains actively positioned at the Aave Request for Comment stage. During this critical phase, the initiative is undergoing rigorous community feedback collection and comprehensive risk analysis from specialized risk service providers within the ecosystem. This stage allows token holders, developers, and risk experts to evaluate the technical security, economic implications, and potential vulnerabilities associated with integrating native Bitcoin vaults into the lending protocol.

Should the proposal achieve broad community consensus and satisfy risk assessments, it will be eligible to proceed to the next phase of governance. This would involve a three-day offchain Snapshot vote, which requires a minimum threshold of at least 320,000 AAVE-equivalent votes cast in favor before the measure can advance to a formal onchain vote, according to Aave’s established governance rules. Following the Snapshot phase, any subsequent onchain vote must strictly meet predetermined quorum and approval requirements to be officially enacted and integrated into the protocol.

Bitcoin-focused developer Babylon Labs has officially submitted a formal proposal to the Aave decentralized autonomous organization designed to let users borrow stablecoins against native Bitcoin.
