Rather than forcing users to move or bridge their assets away from the Bitcoin network, the system uses a specialized non-transferable token minted on the Ethereum network to represent the locked collateral. This representation allows participants to interact with Aave’s liquidity pools and borrow stablecoins against their holdings while the actual underlying Bitcoin remains safely on its native blockchain without ever being wrapped or bridged.

The formal proposal represents the next major step in an ongoing governance process that began earlier this year. According to Babylon Labs, the current submission follows an initial temp-check proposal introduced on May 25, which subsequently advanced to a preliminary community vote that successfully passed on June 10. The momentum behind the integration highlights a growing appetite within the decentralized finance community for methods that can bridge the vast liquidity of the Bitcoin network with the robust lending and borrowing markets available on Ethereum-based protocols like Aave.

As part of the economic terms outlined in the proposal, the Aave DAO stands to benefit directly from the integration. Specifically, the Aave DAO would receive the first $500,000 in qualifying annual revenue generated by the native Bitcoin vault integration. This financial incentive is designed to align the interests of both protocols, encouraging Aave stakeholders to carefully evaluate the technical and economic merits of bringing native Bitcoin collateral into the ecosystem.

The introduction of native Bitcoin collateral represents a significant potential evolution for Aave, which already supports loans against tokenized forms of Bitcoin through assets such as Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) and Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin (cbBTC). While these existing wrapped assets have successfully unlocked billions of dollars in utility for Bitcoin holders within DeFi, they fundamentally rely on centralized or federated custodians to hold and secure the underlying Bitcoin. This reliance introduces varying degrees of counterparty risk, custodial dependency, and potential points of failure that security-conscious Bitcoin holders often seek to avoid. By bypassing the need for wrapped or bridged assets entirely, the Babylon Labs integration aims to offer a trust-minimized alternative that preserves the sovereign nature of Bitcoin while expanding its utility in lending markets.

As of Thursday, the proposal remains actively positioned at the Aave Request for Comment (ARFC) stage. During this critical phase of the governance lifecycle, the initiative is undergoing rigorous community feedback, technical scrutiny, and comprehensive risk analysis from risk management providers and key contributors within the Aave ecosystem.

Should the proposal successfully navigate the ARFC stage and achieve broad community consensus, it will be eligible to proceed to a formal offchain Snapshot vote. According to Aave’s established governance rules, this offchain phase requires at least 320,000 AAVE-equivalent votes cast in favor of the proposal before it can formally advance to an onchain voting stage. Once it reaches the onchain phase, the proposal must strictly meet all pre-defined quorum thresholds and approval requirements to be officially implemented into the Aave V4 architecture.

The ongoing discussions surrounding the integration arrive as Aave continues to expand its technological infrastructure across multiple blockchain networks, recently bringing its V4 iteration to platforms like Avalanche to lay broader groundwork for the future of tokenized asset lending and institutional credit markets.

Bitcoin-focused developer Babylon Labs has formally advanced its initiative to integrate native Bitcoin into decentralized finance (DeFi), submitting a governance proposal that would allow users to borrow stablecoins on Aave using native Bitcoin (BTC) as collateral.
