The divergence marks a significant fork in the road for two of the most prominent ecosystems in the broader blockchain landscape, highlighting a growing philosophical gap between base layer protocols and scaling-focused layer-2 networks.

According to industry researchers, interoperability standards quickly took a back seat as both networks prioritized their own core architectural goals. This lack of alignment has effectively put the burden squarely on wallet developers, who will now have to navigate disparate environments to ensure seamless user experiences. The split was detailed by Derek Chiang, a founding member and researcher at Ethlabs and a co-author of Ethereum’s EIP-8141 proposal, in a public post on social media platform X.

Account abstraction is a crucial technological evolution in the Web3 space, designed to allow programmable rules for authorizing transactions and paying network fees. By abstracting the complexities of traditional cryptographic key management, account abstraction enables features like social recovery, gas sponsorships, session keys, and automated recurring payments, which are widely considered essential for driving mainstream blockchain adoption.

However, the path to achieving native account abstraction across the ecosystem has proven complicated. With consensus talks having failed last week, Ethereum and Base are now moving forward with distinct technical blueprints tailored to their specific operational priorities.

Ethereum is advancing Frame Transactions under EIP-8141 as a headliner item for its upcoming Hegotá upgrade. This proposal is designed to introduce native account abstraction to the layer-1 network while simultaneously establishing a clear, secure roadmap toward post-quantum authentication—a critical long-term security milestone for the world’s leading smart contract platform.

In contrast, Base is focusing its efforts on developing native account abstraction via Keystore under EIP-8130, a specification that is already live on its devnet. This approach reflects the unique structural demands and optimization targets of layer-2 networks, which operate under different economic and performance constraints compared to the underlying mainnet.

This split underscores a broader, structural divergence between layer-1 and layer-2 blockchain networks. Chiang pointed out that layer-1 chains are increasingly pivoting their focus toward hyper-resilient characteristics such as enhanced censorship resistance, capture-resistance, open-source principles, robust privacy, and rigorous security features. These priorities naturally lead layer-1 developers to favor account standards that emphasize foundational robustness.

On the other hand, scalability-focused layer-2 networks like Base are more closely aligned with standards such as EIP-8130, which are optimized for rapid throughput, lower transaction overhead, and streamlined developer integration tailored to everyday end-user interactions.

Despite the immediate friction this creates for cross-chain infrastructure providers, Chiang argued that the separation will not necessarily yield a negative outcome for the industry at large. Instead, both Ethereum and Base are now completely free to innovate on account abstraction to the maximal extent possible, allowing each ecosystem to evolve in strict accordance with its own distinct vision and user base requirements.

This bifurcation means that wallet developers may soon be required to support entirely separate transaction formats and signing mechanisms to provide a consistent, unified experience across both networks, adding a layer of engineering complexity to wallet maintenance and multi-chain deployment.

Looking ahead at the development timeline, Ethereum developers could potentially begin implementing the Hegotá upgrade in late 2026. This timeline follows closely on the heels of Glamsterdam, which is widely regarded as one of the most consequential and anticipated blockchain upgrades of the year. Glamsterdam is explicitly designed to significantly improve network scalability, harden the security parameters of layer-1, and make the overall network substantially easier to use for both developers and retail participants. According to Ethereum’s public roadmap, the mainnet launch for Glamsterdam is expected to take place sometime in the second half of 2026, setting the stage for subsequent upgrades like Hegotá to roll out in due course.

Ethereum and Base are officially set to implement different account abstraction standards after high-level efforts to forge a unified, shared standard ultimately broke down.
