Crypto card access doesn’t match global demand, Tangem says

The announcement comes on the heels of Tangem’s official rollout of its first physical Visa card, designed to facilitate seamless in-store purchases, online transactions, and ATM withdrawals. Initially, the release has been tightly restricted to an initial batch of 5,000 cards, serving as a controlled pilot phase as the company tests infrastructure scaling and regulatory compliance.

According to Tangem, the newly introduced payment card allows users to fund their spending directly from their self-custodial cryptocurrency wallets. In the event that a card needs to be suspended, frozen, or permanently closed, users retain the security and flexibility of moving their remaining funds back into their self-custodial wallet environment without forfeiting control to an intermediary.

Andrey Ilinskiy, the head of Tangem Pay, emphasized that bringing crypto-linked payment cards to market is far more complicated than simply responding to consumer interest. It is not simply a question of where people want crypto cards, Ilinskiy explained, noting that it is where demand, regulation, banking infrastructure, and card-issuing requirements happen to line up, and today, those maps do not always overlap.

The tension between absolute user sovereignty and the strict compliance demands of traditional financial institutions represents a central hurdle for crypto payment providers. Self-custody removes one major boundary by ensuring there is no centralized custodian standing between the user and their digital assets. However, as soon as those decentralized assets cross over into a regulated payment network, an entirely new set of boundaries appears, according to the company. These boundaries are dictated by global financial watchdogs, anti-money laundering protocols, and traditional banking partnerships that require rigorous oversight.

Tangem delivers the cards in nearly 200 countries, excluding only 20

Despite the regulatory hurdles and regional restrictions, Tangem maintains a broad international footprint, delivering its physical Tangem Pay cards to nearly 200 countries worldwide. However, the company confirmed that it is currently unable to ship physical cards to roughly 20 jurisdictions. The exclusion list includes major nations such as China, Russia, and North Korea, as well as territories like Palestine.

Tangem pointed out that these delivery and issuance restrictions do not necessarily mirror the domestic regulatory rules governing cryptocurrency itself within those regions. Instead, a complex matrix of Know Your Customer requirements, international economic sanctions, local banking regulations, and strict card-issuing compliance dictates precisely where a crypto-linked payment card can legally and operationally be made available.

The exact conditions that often spark high local demand for cryptocurrencies as an alternative financial rail can simultaneously make regulated card issuance significantly more difficult. In regions experiencing economic volatility or restrictive monetary policies, citizens frequently turn to digital assets to preserve their wealth, yet those same macroeconomic and political risk factors frequently deter traditional financial institutions and Visa network partners from issuing payment cards in those areas.

To further incentivize user engagement and reward adoption, Tangem is introducing a dedicated cashback program tied to Circle’s widely utilized USDC stablecoin. Under the new reward structure, eligible purchases will yield cashback rates of 1% for Basic users and 2% for Plus users, integrating stablecoin rewards directly into the daily spending experience.

Tangem plans to formally showcase its pioneering physical Tangem Pay cards to the broader fintech and blockchain community at the upcoming Token2049 conference in Singapore. As the company works through its initial 5,000-card release, industry observers will be watching closely to see how self-custodial payment solutions navigate the delicate balance between regulatory compliance and the growing global demand for decentralized financial freedom.
