Hyundai Motor Embraces Stablecoins as US and Mexican Units Complete Landmark USDT Cross-Border Pilot

Automotive giant Hyundai Motor has taken a significant step into the digital asset ecosystem after its United States and Mexican operational units successfully completed a pilot cross-border treasury transfer using Tether’s USDT stablecoin. The proof of concept, which settled a $20,000 transaction in roughly seven minutes on the Avalanche blockchain, marks a growing corporate interest in leveraging blockchain infrastructure to streamline international financial operations, drastically reduce settlement times, and optimize liquidity management outside traditional banking hours.

According to details provided by Tether, the operational framework of the test involved Hyundai Motor America converting corporate funds into USDT, executing the cross-border transfer to Hyundai Motor Mexico, and subsequently converting the stablecoin back into local fiat currency in the form of US dollars. The entire transfer and verification process was finalized in approximately seven minutes. By comparison, traditional cross-border bank transfers typically require anywhere from three to four hours or even longer to clear, depending on intermediary banking relationships, time zones, and compliance bottlenecks.

The successful trial relied on specialized technological partnerships and rigorous internal structuring. Tether noted that the pilot utilized Axiym’s advanced settlement infrastructure to handle the underlying blockchain mechanics. Simultaneously, Hyundai Card played a pivotal role by designing the overarching remittance structure. The financial services arm of the conglomerate also oversaw the intricate regulatory, compliance, accounting, and operational requirements necessary to support a secure and compliant proof of concept within a heavily regulated corporate environment.

The primary objective of the pilot was to evaluate whether stablecoin-based settlement mechanisms could be seamlessly integrated into existing enterprise treasury workflows without necessitating disruptions to established governance, compliance, or accounting protocols. Building on the success of this initial trial, the companies are now looking toward the next phase of implementation. This upcoming stage will expand testing to additional payment corridors and explore local currency settlements as the automotive enterprise continues to evaluate broader enterprise treasury workflows for future deployment.

Corporate treasury emerges as key stablecoin use case

The high-profile pilot by Hyundai Motor highlights a broader, accelerating trend across the global corporate landscape. Corporate treasury has rapidly emerged as one of the most important and fastest-growing use cases for stablecoin technology, with financial firms and fintech providers rolling out dedicated products designed to support real-time cross-border payments, sophisticated liquidity management, and frictionless intercompany settlements.

This corporate pivot toward digital assets has seen major software providers adapt to shifting market demands. In April, enterprise treasury management software provider Kyriba partnered with stablecoin issuer Circle to integrate the USDC stablecoin directly into its enterprise treasury platform. This strategic collaboration empowers corporate treasury teams to manage their stablecoin balances side-by-side with traditional cash positions. Furthermore, it enables businesses to settle eligible cross-border and intercompany payments in near-real time, granting them crucial access to liquidity outside of traditional banking hours while utilizing their pre-existing enterprise workflows and internal approval controls.

Empirical data from the broader financial sector underscores this accelerating adoption curve. A comprehensive report published this month by Bitso Business revealed that stablecoin transaction volumes processed on its platform surged by an impressive 81% year over year during the first half of 2026. This remarkable growth was largely driven by an intensifying corporate demand for real-time settlement capabilities, advanced treasury management tools, and efficient cross-border liquidity solutions. Notably, more than 60% of the new business clients onboarded by Bitso Business during this period consisted of institutional financial entities, including traditional banks and licensed payment service providers.

Broader business surveys further validate the mainstreaming of digital currencies within commercial operations. A June Paybis report found that approximately 22.5% of surveyed businesses either already utilize stablecoins for international payments or actively plan to incorporate them into their financial operations within the next 12 months. Citing extensive research from management consultancy McKinsey, the report highlighted that business-to-business transactions accounted for roughly 60% of the estimated $390 billion in total global stablecoin payment volume recorded in 2025.

This enterprise-driven push coincides with robust macro growth across the entire digital asset economy. According to data from DefiLlama, the total market capitalization of the stablecoin sector has climbed to approximately $312.3 billion. This figure represents an increase of roughly 21.5% compared to a market capitalization of $257.1 billion just a year earlier, with Tether’s USDT firmly maintaining its position as the largest stablecoin in the global market by total valuation.
