Hyundai Motor Embraces Stablecoins as US and Mexican Units Complete Landmark Cross-Border USDT Pilot

Automotive giant Hyundai Motor has taken a significant step toward modernizing its international financial operations after its United States and Mexican divisions successfully completed a pilot cross-border treasury transfer using Tether’s USDT stablecoin. The test transaction, valued at $20,000, was settled on the Avalanche blockchain in approximately seven minutes, marking a major milestone in the integration of blockchain infrastructure into traditional enterprise workflows.

According to details provided by Tether, the operational mechanics of the pilot required Hyundai Motor America to convert standard corporate funds into USDT. This digital asset was then transferred directly across the border to Hyundai Motor Mexico, where it was subsequently converted back into US dollars. The entire end-to-end process, which included both the digital transfer and the necessary verification steps, took roughly seven minutes to complete. When compared against traditional cross-border bank transfers—which typically require anywhere from three to four hours, or often longer depending on intermediary banks, time zones, and legacy clearing systems—the stablecoin-powered route showcased dramatic efficiency gains.

The successful proof of concept was supported by specialized financial infrastructure. Tether noted that the pilot relied on Axiym’s settlement infrastructure to facilitate the movement of digital assets. Meanwhile, Hyundai Card played a pivotal role by designing the underlying remittance structure and closely overseeing the rigorous regulatory, compliance, accounting, and operational requirements necessary to support the initiative.

Rather than uprooting established corporate procedures, the pilot was deliberately designed to evaluate whether stablecoin-based settlement mechanisms could be smoothly integrated into existing corporate treasury operations. A central objective for Hyundai was determining if blockchain rails could be adopted without necessitating major changes to internal governance frameworks, compliance protocols, or accounting practices. Following the success of this initial test, the companies plan to advance to a subsequent phase that will expand testing to additional payment corridors and local currency settlements, allowing them to further evaluate broader enterprise treasury workflows.

Corporate Treasury Emerges as Key Stablecoin Use Case

The initiative by Hyundai reflects a broader, rapidly accelerating trend within the global corporate sector. Corporate treasury has increasingly become a primary focus for stablecoin issuers and financial technology providers, who are actively rolling out enterprise-grade products designed to streamline cross-border payments, optimize liquidity management, and facilitate seamless intercompany settlements.

This momentum is highlighted by strategic collaborations across the financial software landscape. In April, major treasury management software provider Kyriba partnered with Circle to integrate the USDC stablecoin directly into its enterprise treasury platform. This integration was engineered to empower corporate treasury teams to manage stablecoin balances side-by-side with traditional cash positions. By leveraging this capability, businesses can settle eligible cross-border and intercompany payments in near-real time, while also accessing essential liquidity outside of traditional banking hours through familiar treasury workflows and internal approval controls.

Empirical data from business platforms further underscores this shift. A comprehensive report published this month by Bitso Business revealed that stablecoin transaction volumes processed on its platform surged by 81% year over year during the first half of 2026. This substantial growth was propelled primarily by surging commercial demand for real-time settlement solutions, efficient treasury management, and streamlined cross-border liquidity. Notably, more than 60% of the new business clients onboarded by the platform during this period consisted of traditional financial institutions, including commercial banks and licensed payment providers.

Broader business surveys echo these findings, pointing toward widening enterprise adoption of digital assets for day-to-day operations. A June report published by Paybis indicated that roughly 22.5% of surveyed businesses either already utilize stablecoins for international payments or have concrete plans to adopt them within the next 12 months. Citing underlying research from McKinsey, the report highlighted that business-to-business transactions accounted for approximately 60% of the estimated $390 billion in total global stablecoin payment volume recorded in 2025.

This expanding enterprise footprint coincides with robust overall growth in the wider stablecoin ecosystem. According to data from DefiLlama, the total market capitalization of the stablecoin sector has climbed to approximately $312.3 billion. This figure represents an increase of roughly 21.5% compared to the $257.1 billion market capitalization recorded a year earlier, with Tether’s USDT continuing to maintain its position as the largest stablecoin by total market value. As traditional corporate giants like Hyundai continue to test and validate these digital payment rails, the boundary between conventional banking and blockchain-based treasury management continues to blur.
