Harmonic Security Secures $50 Million Series B to Expand Workforce AI Security and Governance Platform

Workforce AI security startup Harmonic Security announced today that it has successfully raised $50 million in a Series B funding round, bringing the total capital raised by the company to $76 million since its inception. The fresh investment round was led by Crosspoint Capital Partners, with additional financial support and participation from the company’s existing investors. The new capital injection is slated to help Harmonic accelerate its growth trajectory by significantly expanding its engineering and go-to-market teams across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Founded in 2023, Harmonic Security was created by CEO Alastair Paterson and CTO Bryan Woolgar-O’Neil. The two founders bring a strong track record in the cybersecurity sector, having previously founded Digital Shadows, a digital risk protection firm that was successfully acquired by ReliaQuest for $160 million. Drawing on their extensive experience in threat intelligence and enterprise security, Paterson and Woolgar-O’Neil launched Harmonic to address what they identified as one of the fastest-growing blind spots in modern corporate environments: the unsecured, unregulated adoption of artificial intelligence tools by everyday employees.

As generative artificial intelligence tools, large language models, and autonomous assistants become ubiquitous in the modern workplace, organizations are grappling with a complex new paradigm of risk. Employees across departments—from marketing and engineering to human resources and finance—frequently adopt third-party AI applications to boost productivity, streamline daily tasks, and automate complex workflows. However, this decentralized adoption often occurs without the knowledge or oversight of corporate IT and security departments.

To tackle this challenge, Harmonic Security has built a comprehensive platform designed specifically to discover, monitor, and secure AI tools used by employees across the entire workforce. The startup’s security solution is architected to cover a broad spectrum of deployment environments, including browser-based AI applications, desktop-installed AI tools, and emerging agentic workflows. By integrating deeply into the enterprise environment, the platform classifies every AI task as it happens, identifies its specific use case, and provides real-time control mechanisms to mitigate potential hazards before they can impact the organization.

The expanded coverage provided by Harmonic’s platform exposes a wide variety of hidden risks that traditionally evade standard cybersecurity monitoring tools. Among the most pressing concerns addressed by the startup are the use of personal accounts for corporate tasks—often referred to as shadow AI—and the inadvertent exposure of sensitive proprietary data, intellectual property, and regulated customer information to external models. As companies attempt to balance the undeniable productivity gains of artificial intelligence with the strict demands of data privacy and compliance, visibility and control have become paramount.

At the technological core of Harmonic’s offering is an innovative approach utilizing custom small language models. Rather than relying solely on traditional network monitoring or rigid data loss prevention rules, Harmonic uses these specialized small language models to read each individual AI interaction directly in its proper operational context. This contextual analysis enables organizations to accurately categorize different types of tasks, understand rapidly emerging use cases as they evolve within the workforce, and apply tailored, dynamic security controls that adapt to business needs without stifling innovation.

In addition to risk mitigation, the same underlying technological engine powers Harmonic’s Usage Intelligence layer. This feature is designed to offer deep, actionable visibility into the specific AI use cases that genuinely create business value and measurably improve employee workflows. By distinguishing between high-value operational enhancements and risky or redundant AI experimentation, the platform equips corporate leadership with the metrics they need to justify their AI investments while maintaining rigorous governance.

The market demand for dual-purpose solutions that simultaneously address risk reduction and value realization is driving rapid interest from enterprise buyers. Alastair Paterson, co-founder and CEO of Harmonic Security, highlighted this unique market dynamic in the wake of the funding announcement, noting that corporate boardrooms are increasingly focused on the dual mandate of security and ROI.

"Every board I talk to is asking two questions: how do we reduce the risk of AI use, and are we getting value? Most vendors struggle to answer the first, yet we address both. From the very start, we doubled down on our custom small language models, which means we can benefit from a unique insight into enterprise AI use," said Paterson.

The cybersecurity landscape has seen a surge in venture capital funding directed toward specialized startups aiming to secure artificial intelligence at various layers of the technology stack, ranging from runtime security for autonomous agents to autonomous offensive security platforms and hostile intent detection. Within this competitive and fast-moving ecosystem, Harmonic Security’s latest funding round underscores the growing investor confidence in foundational workforce AI governance and the specialized approaches required to protect enterprise data in the age of generative artificial intelligence.
