Crypto Super PACs Ramp Up Spending in Key 2026 Midterm Races as Ohio Battleground Heats Up

Affiliates of the Fairshake political action committee (PAC), which is heavily financed by major industry heavyweights including Coinbase and Ripple Labs, have significantly escalated their financial footprint. In what is rapidly shaping up to be a pivotal battleground for control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, these crypto-aligned entities have increased their initially announced expenditures by more than 50 percent.

According to financial disclosures filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Fairshake’s prominent affiliate, Defend American Jobs, has poured a staggering $46.6 million into media campaigns. The group is aggressively deploying these resources to oppose former lawmaker Sherrod Brown while actively supporting Republican incumbent Jon Husted in the high-stakes Ohio Senate race for the 2026 midterms. This massive financial injection marks a sharp and dramatic increase over what Fairshake initially indicated back in September, when it stated plans to spend roughly $30 million to thwart Brown’s potential return to the United States Senate.

The heavy influx of digital asset industry capital has not gone unnoticed by the targets of these campaigns. Addressing the aggressive wave of attack ads funded by the crypto sector, Sherrod Brown did not mince words during an interview that aired on Friday on the political commentary podcast Pod Save America.

"I’ve spent my career taking on Wall Street, taking on big pharma, taking on big oil and been successful in many cases," Brown said during the interview. Pointing directly to his political opponent and the forces backing him, the former lawmaker added, "Jon Husted is their boy… They know he’s their guy, they know I’m going to hold him accountable and I guess it’s a perfect storm, so they spend literally tens and tens of millions of dollars."

With just under three weeks remaining until the United States elections, the political landscape in Ohio is already operating at a fever pitch, with early voting having been underway for ten days. Notably, Fairshake’s primary affiliate was far from the only crypto-backed political action committee to ramp up its financial contributions as voters across Ohio head to the polls.

The Digital Freedom Fund, a Super PAC originally established by Gemini co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, also intensified its footprint in the state. According to FEC filings, the group reported approximately $3 million in ad spending this week alone to oppose Brown and support Husted. This latest wave of funding brings the Digital Freedom Fund’s total media purchases in the fiercely contested Ohio race to more than $5.9 million.

The escalating battle in Ohio underscores a continuation of the intense legislative and electoral rivalry seen during the 2024 election cycle. In fact, Fairshake’s current expenditures in the state have already surpassed its previous efforts from 2024. During that election cycle, the PAC spent a notable $41 million supporting Republican Bernie Moreno while similarly opposing Brown, who was running for reelection to the Senate at the time.

During his tenure in Congress, the Democratic lawmaker chaired the Senate Banking Committee and established himself as one of the most prominent, outspoken voices challenging legislative frameworks, regulatory policies, and broader initiatives favored by the cryptocurrency industry. His legislative posture made him a prime target for digital asset sector political committees seeking to reshape the composition of congressional committees overseeing financial services and regulatory oversight.

The fierce contest in Ohio, however, represents only one front in Fairshake’s broader strategic deployment as the midterm elections loom closer. Defend American Jobs has also cast its financial gaze further west, reporting FEC expenditures of more than $6.7 million to oppose Independent candidate Dan Osborn in Nebraska’s tightly watched Senate race. Osborn is running a competitive campaign against Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts. During his time in office, Ricketts recorded votes in favor of several key legislative proposals important to the digital asset ecosystem, including the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENISUS) Act.

Representatives for Fairshake and Jon Husted’s campaign were contacted by Cointelegraph for comment regarding the escalating campaign expenditures, but neither organization provided an immediate response.

How could the 2026 elections shape US crypto laws and policy?

The leadership behind Fairshake has been remarkably transparent regarding its overarching political strategy. The PAC has made no secret of its primary intention to "back pro-crypto candidates" throughout the 2026 election cycle. This multi-million-dollar strategy is part of a calculated, long-term goal to populate the next session of the United States Congress with lawmakers who are demonstrably supportive of regulatory policies and frameworks favored by the digital asset industry. Demonstrating the sheer scale of its war chest, the PAC reported in January that it held an imposing $193 million in cash on hand as it prepared for the legislative battles of the midterm elections.

Beyond major high-profile vehicles like Fairshake and the Digital Freedom Fund, a diverse ecosystem of other crypto-aligned political committees has actively worked to influence the mindset of 2026 voters well ahead of election day. For instance, the Fellowship committee—an advocacy group backed by prominent financial and digital asset institutions Cantor Fitzgerald and Anchorage Digital—reported spending more than $11 million between August 2025 and August 2026. The vast majority of these funds were funneled directly into media campaigns designed to support friendly candidates running for seats in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate.

As the calendar ticks down toward election day, the unprecedented concentration of digital asset funding in targeted federal races signals that the crypto industry’s strategy of direct electoral engagement has evolved from an experimental political experiment into a permanent, highly organized fixture of American politics. With control of Congress hanging in the balance, these massive financial commitments are expected to play a decisive role in determining the future trajectory of federal legislation governing blockchain technology, digital assets, and financial market regulation for years to come.
