Hyundai Motor Completes Cross-Border Stablecoin Payment Pilot Using USDT on Avalanche

Automotive giant Hyundai Motor has successfully executed a landmark cross-border treasury transfer pilot utilizing Tether’s USDT stablecoin, marking another significant milestone for the integration of blockchain technology into traditional corporate financial operations.

According to details shared by Tether, the pilot transaction involved the United States and Mexican corporate units of the global automaker. The two entities completed a $20,000 settlement utilizing the Avalanche blockchain, drastically cutting down the time and friction typically associated with international fiat currency movements.

During the proof-of-concept test, Hyundai Motor America converted the funds into USDT, transferred the digital asset across the Avalanche network to Hyundai Motor Mexico, and subsequently converted the stablecoin back into local funds. The entire end-to-end transfer and verification process took approximately seven minutes. By comparison, traditional cross-border bank transfers typically require anywhere from three to four hours, and often significantly longer depending on intermediary banking relationships, time zones, and weekend processing schedules.

The infrastructure supporting the pilot was multifaceted, drawing on specialized fintech solutions and internal corporate oversight. Tether noted that the transaction utilized Axiym’s settlement infrastructure, while Hyundai Card was responsible for designing the overarching remittance structure. Additionally, Hyundai Card oversaw the complex regulatory, compliance, accounting, and operational requirements necessary to successfully support the proof of concept within strict corporate governance frameworks.

The primary objective of the pilot was to evaluate whether stablecoin-based settlement mechanisms could be seamlessly integrated into existing enterprise treasury operations without demanding disruptive changes to foundational governance, compliance, or accounting protocols. Following the success of this initial test, the participating companies plan to expand their evaluation. The next phase will scale testing to additional payment corridors and local currency settlements as the enterprise continues to assess broader corporate treasury workflows and the viability of decentralized settlement rails at scale.

Corporate Treasury Emerges as Key Stablecoin Use Case

Corporate treasury functions have rapidly emerged as a vital frontier for stablecoin issuers and digital asset infrastructure providers. Financial technology firms and blockchain networks alike are increasingly rolling out institutional-grade products explicitly designed to support streamlined cross-border payments, efficient liquidity management, and frictionless intercompany settlement.

This enterprise shift is gaining noticeable momentum across various industries and software providers. In April, prominent treasury management software provider Kyriba partnered with Circle to integrate the USDC stablecoin directly into its enterprise treasury platform. This strategic collaboration was designed to empower corporate treasury teams to manage stablecoin balances alongside traditional cash positions within a single interface. Furthermore, the integration allows organizations to settle eligible cross-border and intercompany payments in near-real time, unlocking critical access to liquidity outside of traditional banking hours while maintaining existing corporate workflows and multi-layered approval controls.

Data from major digital asset platforms highlights a corresponding surge in institutional demand. A report published this month by Bitso Business revealed that stablecoin transaction volumes processed on its institutional platform increased by 81% year over year during the first half of the year. This substantial growth was largely propelled by escalating market demand for real-time settlement capabilities, advanced treasury management tools, and resilient cross-border liquidity solutions. Notably, more than 60% of new business clients onboarded by the platform during this period consisted of institutional financial entities, including traditional banks and licensed payment service providers.

Broader business surveys and market research reinforce the narrative of accelerating enterprise adoption. A comprehensive report released in June indicated that over 22% of surveyed businesses already utilize stablecoins for international B2B payments or intend to incorporate them into their operations within a 12-month window. Citing broader industry research from firms like McKinsey, the analysis highlighted that business-to-business transactions accounted for roughly 60% of the estimated $390 billion in aggregate global stablecoin payment volume.

This corporate push into blockchain-based settlements arrives against a backdrop of steady expansion for the wider digital asset market. Total stablecoin market capitalization has continued its upward trajectory, climbing to approximately $312.3 billion. This figure represents an increase of roughly 21.5% compared to the $257.1 billion recorded a year prior, according to data from DefiLlama. Amid this ongoing growth across the digital economy, Tether’s USDT continues to maintain its position as the largest stablecoin in the global market by total market capitalization, underpinning numerous enterprise experiments and commercial payment corridors worldwide.
