Zcash Surge Driven by NU7 Upgrade Schedule Agreement

Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash (ZEC) experienced a notable upward market movement over the past 24 hours, surging approximately 12% following a key development in its technical roadmap. Core developers successfully reached an agreement regarding the mainnet activation block for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade, which is now slated to roll out in early November.

Trading data from CoinGecko indicated that the token was changing hands around $1,270 during late Wednesday trading sessions. This latest market rally aligns with a formal GitHub proposal submitted on Tuesday by Zcash developer Sean Bowe. The proposal officially designates the NU7 mainnet activation at block 3,543,405, an operational milestone that developers project will be reached on or around November 5.

The recent price appreciation builds upon an already impressive performance for the privacy coin this year. Powered by advanced trustless zero-knowledge proofs—cryptographic protocols that allow one party to prove to another that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond the validity of the statement itself—the value of Zcash has climbed more than 148% year-to-date, reflecting sustained interest in privacy-centric digital assets amid broader shifting market dynamics.

Outlining the progress of the network upgrade, Bowe noted on GitHub that the activation height was agreed upon during a scheduled Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) editor meeting. He cautioned, however, that the engineering team still needs to finalize the comprehensive upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the core repository. Following the discussion, two developers formally approved the changes on the platform, signaling internal consensus within the technical working group.

Further confirmation of the timeline comes from the Zakura NU7 dashboard, a dedicated tracking interface that lists the upgrade as pending execution on the mainnet at block 3,543,405. The portal similarly points to an estimated activation date around November 5, aligning with the parameters established in Bowe’s GitHub submission.

At its core, the NU7 upgrade aims to dramatically overhaul network efficiency by reducing Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds, bringing it down to a swift 25 seconds. This architectural adjustment is designed to allow network transactions to receive confirmations significantly faster than the current standard. Prior to this week’s consensus on the mainnet schedule, the upgrade from the legacy 75-second block time had been undergoing rigorous testing phases since early October to ensure network stability and security.

As the target date approaches, ecosystem participants are closely monitoring readiness metrics provided by development organizations. The Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker shows that six out of the 12 planned operational tasks have been successfully completed. The remaining work items on the tracker involve addressing Zebra node synchronization issues and carrying out overarching mainnet preparations.

At this stage, core developers have not yet confirmed whether these outstanding technical challenges could impact the planned early November activation date, leaving the community to watch progress updates closely as the countdown to block 3,543,405 continues.
