Zcash (ZEC) has extended its impressive triple-digit year-to-date gains, surging approximately 12% over the past 24 hours as core developers formally agreed on a mainnet activation block for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade, which is now squarely targeted for early November.
Trading around $1,270 on Wednesday according to data from CoinGecko, the privacy-focused cryptocurrency’s latest upward price movement coincided directly with a crucial proposal submitted to GitHub on Tuesday by Zcash developer Sean Bowe. The proposal established the intended mainnet activation at block height 3,543,405, an operational milestone that developers and community members expect will be reached on or around November 5.
This latest market rally further cements an exceptional performance for the digital asset this year. The value of the privacy-centric cryptocurrency, which relies on advanced trustless zero-knowledge proofs to secure transactions and shield user data, has climbed by more than 148% year to date. This sustained momentum reflects growing market confidence in the protocol’s ongoing technical roadmap and core infrastructure improvements.
The formal agreement regarding the block height came to light following discussions within the development community. "Height agreed at ZIP editor meeting," Bowe wrote in the GitHub pull request notes, while adding a caveat that the core development team still needs to finalize the comprehensive upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the main repository. Thus far, the proposed changes have secured formal approval from two key developers, signaling broad consensus among the technical leadership.
Further supporting the impending timeline, the Zakura NU7 dashboard also lists the upcoming upgrade as currently pending on the mainnet at the designated block height of 3,543,405, maintaining the early November projection.
The primary objective of the NU7 upgrade is to radically optimize the network’s operational efficiency by reducing Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds. Under the proposed parameters, block times will drop from the historical 75-second duration down to just 25 seconds. This substantial acceleration is designed to allow user transactions to receive network confirmations significantly faster, thereby improving the overall user experience and throughput of the decentralized network. The shorter block time configuration has already been undergoing rigorous testing in live environments since early October.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the market performance and the scheduled November launch date, some technical preparations remain underway. According to the Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker, six out of the 12 total checklist tasks have been successfully completed. The remaining work involves addressing specific Zebra node synchronization issues and carrying out necessary mainnet deployment preparations.
As the developer community works through these remaining items, project contributors have not yet explicitly confirmed whether these outstanding technical hurdles could ultimately impact or delay the planned activation date, leaving developers working diligently against the clock to ensure a smooth and secure transition.
