Zcash Extends Triple-Digit Gains as Developers Target November 5 for NU7 Mainnet Activation

Zcash (ZEC) has extended its impressive triple-digit year-to-date gains, surging roughly 12% over the past 24 hours as core developers reached a formal consensus on the mainnet activation height for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade. The milestone puts the network on track for a rollout in early November, reinforcing a bullish market sentiment that has driven the privacy-focused cryptocurrency upward by more than 148% since the beginning of the year.

At the time of reporting on Wednesday, the privacy coin was trading around $1,270 on CoinGecko, reflecting strong market momentum. This latest upward movement closely mirrors technical progress made by the development team, spearheaded by a proposal submitted to GitHub on Tuesday by Zcash developer Sean Bowe. The proposal officially sets the target activation at block 3,543,405, an event that network participants expect will take place around November 5.

The consensus was reached during a collaborative Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) editor meeting, where developers agreed on the exact block height. Bowe formally announced the decision on GitHub, noting that the team still needs to finalize the comprehensive upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the main codebase. So far, the changes have secured formal approval from two key developers, marking a significant step forward in the protocol’s evolution.

Further confirmation of the timeline comes from the Zakura NU7 dashboard, which currently lists the upgrade as pending on the mainnet at the designated block 3,543,405, maintaining the projected November 5 activation window.

The upcoming NU7 upgrade represents a substantial technological overhaul for the Zcash network, which utilizes advanced, trustless zero-knowledge proofs to provide enhanced user privacy and transaction confidentiality. One of the primary objectives of NU7 is to drastically reduce Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds, bringing it down from the current 75 seconds to a much faster 25 seconds. By accelerating block generation times, the network aims to enable transactions to receive confirmations significantly quicker, improving the overall user experience and bringing efficiency closer to mainstream blockchain standards. This accelerated block schedule has been undergoing rigorous testing on the network’s testnet environments since early October.

Despite the optimism surrounding the market price and the consensus on block height, infrastructural work remains ongoing behind the scenes. According to the Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker, six out of 12 planned tasks have been successfully completed. However, critical work remains, particularly involving Zebra node synchronization issues and broader mainnet preparations. At this stage, developers have not yet confirmed whether these outstanding technical hurdles could ultimately impact or delay the planned November 5 activation date.

As the network edges closer to the deployment window, market participants and node operators will be closely monitoring both the GitHub repository and foundation trackers to ensure seamless synchronization ahead of block 3,543,405.
