An official "altseason" may not have technically arrived yet, but cryptocurrency traders are undeniably starting their portfolio rotations, and the shifting market numbers are becoming increasingly difficult for analysts to ignore.
Over the past thirty days, pockets of the digital asset market have recorded staggering upward momentum. The memecoin launchpad PONS surged by more than 350%, while prominent decentralized finance (DeFi) assets also posted massive gains. Uniswap’s UNI token climbed over 110%, Arbitrum’s ARB jumped more than 150%, and the artificial intelligence-focused NEAR Protocol shot up by approximately 180%. Meanwhile, the privacy-focused token Zcash reached a record-shattering high above $1,600, while Bitcoin Layer-2 token LIT and memecoin launchpad token PUMP joined the ranks of the period’s top-performing digital assets, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
Spanning a diverse array of sectors, these widespread gains do not point to one single, obvious trade or narrative. Instead, they suggest that a significant portion of market participants are actively looking toward coins backed by tangible business models and operational utility this time around.
Examining the massive rallies across tokens such as ARB, UNI, Jupiter’s JUP, and Ondo’s ONDO, Bankless podcast host David Hoffman highlighted a common thread running through these performing assets. During a recent episode, Hoffman pointed out that these successful tokens share a fundamental characteristic: they generate revenue and print real cash flow, suggesting that the current market movement may be driven more by practical utility than pure speculation.
Supporting this observation, data from the past week reveals that memecoins occupied only two spots among the top twenty biggest gainers, with Pudgy Penguins serving as the sole representative from that sector over a seven-day window.
However, industry veterans caution that fundamentals alone do not tell the entire story. Sergej Kunz, co-founder of 1inch, notes that memecoins have continued to exhibit some of the strongest growth among retail buyers over the trailing 30-day period. At the same time, Kunz emphasizes that DeFi protocols, privacy tokens, artificial intelligence projects, and tokenized traditional assets are simultaneously commanding significant market attention.
According to Kunz, the unfolding pattern resembles breadth before depth. A growing number of individual crypto wallets are purchasing a broader range of tokens, but they are generally executing these trades in smaller, more cautious amounts. This measured caution visible in the on-chain data fits the broader macroeconomic trend of selective participation, where market users choose to allocate capital selectively rather than going all-in on a single speculative asset class.
So What Will Make This Altseason Different?
As capital shifts across the ecosystem, fundamental questions remain for market participants. Is the cryptocurrency market finally maturing into a more discerning environment that allocates capital into assets with actual utility, as Hoffman suggests? Or will the cycle once again devolve into a speculative frenzy driven predominantly by memecoins featuring dogs in hats and humorous branding?

It remains too early to definitively answer that question, especially since CoinMarketCap’s official Altcoin Season Index has yet to officially break into true altseason territory. The index currently hovers at 64 out of 100. While that represents an increase from 48 the previous week, it still sits comfortably below the crucial 75 threshold required to mark the official onset of a new altseason.
Furthermore, a relatively small concentration of coins continues to account for the vast majority of the altcoin market. Data from institutional trading firm Talos indicates that the top ten altcoins currently comprise roughly 80% of the total altcoin market capitalization, an increase from approximately 70% at the close of 2024.
Samar Sen, head of international markets at Talos, explains that the data points to a market where capital is clustering tightly around a smaller number of established assets rather than rotating broadly into the long tail of micro-cap tokens. Sen notes that order flow data from September demonstrated a notably strong buying tilt, with net buying dominating on almost every single trading day. This dynamic contrasts sharply with late 2024, when buyers and sellers were much more evenly matched, and a post-election rally produced broad-based outperformance across a wider basket of legacy tokens including DOGE, ADA, and HBAR.
What People Are Actually Buying
According to Sen, the strongest market performance is currently concentrated around specific narrative sectors, including revenue-generating protocols, onchain perpetuals, and DeFi projects such as HYPE, LIT, UNI, and MORPHO.
Privacy-centric assets like ZEC, NEAR, and Monero (XMR) are also demonstrating strong price action, alongside artificial intelligence-adjacent tokens including VVV and TAO. Concurrently, Talos is tracking a flurry of transactional activity surrounding memecoin launchpads like PUMP and PONS, while assets tied to the Robinhood ecosystem and the USELESS memecoin are also maintaining solid momentum.
Echoing Kunz’s assessment, Sen observes that the overall market is becoming significantly more selective. Investors are concentrating their capital around specific narratives and operational ecosystems rather than treating the altcoin market as a single, homogenous broad trade.
Tokenized gold and tokenized stocks are attracting a growing base of buyers, while AI-related tokens are continuing their upward trajectory, albeit starting from a relatively small market base.
Overall, however, the current market environment may reflect less of a wholesale structural shift from pure speculation to fundamental utility, and more of a chaotic jumble of competing narratives. This overlap was vividly illustrated earlier in the month following the explosion of unconventional trading pairs on Robinhood. In an unexpected crossover, traditional tokenized stocks suddenly began trading directly against memecoins through experimental market pairings such as BONER/HIMS and SPACEHOOD/SPCX. One such unconventional pairing reportedly generated more than $425 million in total trading volume within a single 24-hour period in early September.

The Case for a More Fundamental Altseason
Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance and Yield Basis, reports observing a notable shift in market attention toward actual use cases and genuine institutional demand compared to previous crypto market cycles.
Egorov notes that there is currently heightened interest in protocols that perform useful functions, successfully bridge the gap between traditional crypto infrastructure and real-world financial activity, and prove their capabilities through live execution. Stablecoins represent a prime example of this trend, particularly regarding their expanding utilization in onchain foreign exchange markets and advanced fintech applications. Egorov believes that the single biggest driver moving forward will be the deepening integration of crypto infrastructure with the broader traditional economy.
If this underlying demand continues to expand, it could provide upcoming altseason cycles with an entirely new source of organic buying pressure as crypto infrastructure finds practical utility outside the confines of pure digital asset trading—though realization of that potential remains a significant conditional factor.
Who Is Actually Driving the Rally?
Underneath the shifting token prices, institutional and retail market structures are also evolving. Talos data indicates that dealer participation in altcoin trading has dropped from approximately 65% at the end of 2024 down to roughly 32% in September, even while aggregate order flows maintained a strong, persistent buying trend.
Sen points out that this metric represents a significant departure from the previous altcoin rally, suggesting that professional liquidity providers and market makers have played a comparatively smaller role in fueling the current market move.
At the same time, access points for everyday users have become vastly streamlined. Market exposure that once required traders to interact directly and manually with decentralized liquidity venues like Raydium or Orca is now readily accessible through mainstream trading platforms. This evolution successfully lowers historical barriers to entry and broadens retail participation across the board.
Simultaneously, professional and sophisticated traders now possess an expanded suite of analytical tools to track capital movements across the ecosystem. From advanced onchain wallet tracking to copy-trading features, participants can easily identify where capital is flowing across wallets, protocols, and distinct blockchain networks.
This combination creates a dual market environment defined by broader, frictionless retail access alongside increasingly sophisticated methods for professional traders to identify where structural activity is actively building.
