Zcash Takes Major Step Toward NU7 Upgrade as Testnet Activation Goes Live

Zcash has officially advanced its upcoming protocol overhaul by activating the NU7 network upgrade on its testnet, transitioning months of planning and developer discussions into real-world testing. The milestone sets the stage for a critical evaluation period as the network community looks ahead to a potential mainnet deployment in November.

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which was designated as the scheduled activation point for the NU7 upgrade—was successfully mined on October 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The core development team and associated organizations quickly acknowledged the milestone, with official communications on social media confirming that NU7 was officially live and operating on the testnet environment.

This activation marks a pivotal phase for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency, providing developers, node operators, and infrastructure providers with several weeks to monitor network stability, assess performance metrics, and identify any potential bugs or unforeseen issues before the changes are committed to the main production network.

The NU7 upgrade introduces several substantial changes to the underlying architecture of Zcash, aiming to improve transaction throughput, economic sustainability, and overall network efficiency. Among the most prominent adjustments is a significant reduction in the network’s target block spacing. Under the current parameters, Zcash targets a block time of approximately 75 seconds. The NU7 upgrade seeks to slash this interval down to 25 seconds, which would dramatically speed up transaction confirmation times and enhance the user experience for those interacting with the blockchain.

In addition to faster blocks, the NU7 upgrade brings important structural modifications to how transactions are processed and how network revenue is distributed. The upgrade permanently disables version 4 transactions, phasing out older transaction formats in favor of more modern, secure, and efficient protocol standards. Furthermore, NU7 integrates a newly designed Network Sustainability Mechanism. This feature is intended to redirect a specific portion of transaction fees back into future block rewards, creating a more sustainable long-term economic model for network participants and miners as the overall issuance schedule evolves.

However, the deprecation of version 4 transactions carries a critical warning for long-term holders. The removal of support for these legacy formats means that any native ZEC currently held within Zcash’s older Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless holders actively migrate their funds prior to the full activation of NU7 on the mainnet. Community advocates and technical teams have been ramping up educational efforts to ensure users are aware of the impending deadline and take the necessary steps to safeguard their assets.

Ahead of the testnet launch, the Zcash Foundation released software updates, including release candidate builds, urging testnet operators and community members to deploy the software and stress-test NU7 under realistic operational conditions. This preliminary phase is designed to give the development ecosystem enough practical data to determine whether the codebase is robust enough to proceed toward mainnet release without compromising network security.

The timeline leading up to the mainnet activation is tight but deliberate. Zcash developers are scheduled to convene on October 20 to review the performance data gathered from the ongoing testnet trial. During this evaluation, the team will make the definitive final decision regarding whether to move forward with the mainnet rollout and will formally set the exact activation height. If current projections hold and the testnet phase uncovers no critical roadblocks, the mainnet activation for NU7 is targeted for November 5.
