Zcash (ZEC) has extended its impressive triple-digit year-to-date gains, surging roughly 12% over the past 24 hours as core developers formally agreed on a mainnet activation block height for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade.
The privacy-focused cryptocurrency traded around $1,270 during mid-week market sessions, according to data from CoinGecko. The latest upward price movement coincided with a formal GitHub proposal submitted on Tuesday by Zcash developer Sean Bowe. The proposal sets the target mainnet activation at block 3,543,405, an operational milestone that developers and network participants currently expect to hit on or around November 5.
With this latest market push, the value of the privacy-centric digital asset—which relies on advanced trustless zero-knowledge proofs to secure user transactions and shield financial data—has climbed by more than 148% since the beginning of the year. This robust performance underscores growing market enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming network overhaul and its potential to significantly enhance the usability and underlying efficiency of the Zcash blockchain.
The agreement on the activation parameters came following collaborative discussions among core contributors. “Height agreed at ZIP editor meeting,” Bowe wrote in his GitHub submission, while noting that the engineering team still needs to finalize the comprehensive upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the codebase. Early technical validation was swift, with at least two prominent developers approving the proposed changes.
Further confirmation of the schedule has been established across the project’s development trackers. The Zakura NU7 dashboard also lists the upgrade as pending on the mainnet at block 3,543,405, reaffirming the early November timeline for the community and node operators.
The core objective of the NU7 upgrade is to dramatically improve network throughput and user experience by reducing Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds. Under the current parameters, transactions take approximately 75 seconds per block to process. NU7 will lower this duration to just 25 seconds, allowing transactions to receive network confirmations significantly faster. This reduction in latency has been a primary focus for the development team, and the proposed changes have been undergoing rigorous testing on the network’s testnet environments since early October.
Despite the optimism surrounding the market price and the consensus on the activation block, technical preparations are still ongoing. The Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker indicates that while substantial progress has been made, several critical engineering tasks remain on the checklist. Specifically, the tracker showed that six out of 12 required tasks have been successfully completed so far.
The remaining work primarily involves resolving ongoing Zebra node synchronization issues and carrying out necessary mainnet preparations to ensure a smooth transition. At this stage, developers have not explicitly confirmed whether these outstanding technical hurdles could ultimately impact or delay the planned November 5 activation date, leaving node operators and community members closely monitoring GitHub repositories and developer updates for further announcements.
As the target date approaches, the combination of strong market performance, accelerated transaction capabilities, and major protocol updates continues to draw significant attention to the privacy coin sector.
