Hyundai Motor US and Mexican Units Complete Cross-Border Stablecoin Payment Pilot on Avalanche

In a significant milestone for enterprise blockchain adoption, the United States and Mexican corporate divisions of automotive giant Hyundai Motor have successfully executed a pilot cross-border treasury transfer using Tether’s USDT stablecoin. The transaction, valued at $20,000, was settled on the Avalanche blockchain in approximately seven minutes, highlighting the potential for decentralized infrastructure to drastically accelerate traditional corporate finance operations.

According to details provided by stablecoin issuer Tether, the transaction involved a complete end-to-end currency conversion cycle. Hyundai Motor America converted corporate funds into USDT, transferred the digital asset across the border to Hyundai Motor Mexico, and subsequently converted the stablecoin back into traditional United States dollars. The entire transfer, including processing and verification protocols, took roughly seven minutes. This stands in stark contrast to legacy international banking channels, which typically require anywhere from three to four hours—and frequently multiple business days—to clear similar cross-border transfers.

The technological architecture behind the pilot relied heavily on institutional-grade infrastructure and rigorous internal oversight. Tether confirmed that the transaction utilized settlement infrastructure developed by Axiym. Meanwhile, Hyundai Card played a critical role by designing the remittance structure, as well as overseeing the complex regulatory, compliance, accounting, and operational requirements necessary to successfully execute the proof of concept.

Rather than upending existing institutional frameworks, the pilot was deliberately engineered to evaluate whether stablecoin-based settlement mechanisms could be seamlessly integrated into current corporate treasury workflows. A primary objective was determining if digital assets could accelerate transaction speeds without demanding sweeping alterations to corporate governance, legal compliance, or standard accounting practices. Following the success of this initial test, the participating companies plan to advance to a subsequent phase of testing. This next stage will expand the scope to include additional payment corridors and local currency settlements as the enterprise evaluates broader corporate treasury workflows for long-term implementation.

Corporate treasury has rapidly emerged as a key use case for stablecoins, capturing the attention of major enterprises seeking alternatives to legacy financial plumbing. Stablecoin companies and financial technology providers are increasingly rolling out sophisticated products specifically designed to streamline cross-border payments, optimize liquidity management, and facilitate efficient intercompany settlements.

The broader enterprise landscape has seen a flurry of activity aimed at bridging traditional corporate finance with blockchain rails. In April, major enterprise treasury management software provider Kyriba partnered with Circle to integrate the USDC stablecoin directly into its institutional platform. This collaboration enables corporate treasury teams to manage digital asset balances alongside traditional cash positions. Furthermore, it allows businesses to settle eligible cross-border and intercompany payments in near-real time, while unlocking access to crucial liquidity outside of traditional banking hours by leveraging existing treasury workflows and internal approval controls.

Empirical data from the broader financial sector underscores this surging demand. A report published this month by Bitso Business revealed that stablecoin transaction volumes processed on its platform surged by 81% year over year during the first half of 2026. This impressive growth was primarily propelled by enterprise demand for real-time settlement capabilities, advanced treasury management tools, and reliable cross-border liquidity solutions. Notably, more than 60% of the new business clients onboarded by the platform during this period comprised traditional financial institutions, including commercial banks and licensed payment service providers.

Recent business surveys further reinforce the narrative of expanding enterprise adoption. A June industry report published by Paybis found that approximately 22.5% of surveyed businesses either already utilize stablecoins for international commercial payments or actively plan to implement them within the next twelve months. Citing comprehensive research from management consulting firm McKinsey, the report noted that business-to-business transactions accounted for roughly 60% of the estimated $390 billion in total global stablecoin payment volume observed throughout 2025.

This institutional push is unfolding against the backdrop of a steadily expanding digital asset market. According to data from DefiLlama, the total market capitalization of the global stablecoin sector has climbed to approximately $312.3 billion, representing an increase of roughly 21.5% compared to the $257.1 billion recorded a year prior. Within this expanding market, Tether’s USDT continues to maintain its position as the largest stablecoin by total market valuation, serving as a primary instrument for both retail and enterprise-grade liquidity across multiple blockchain networks.
