Zcash Activates NU7 Upgrade on Testnet Ahead of Targeted November Mainnet Rollout

Zcash has officially activated its highly anticipated NU7 network upgrade on the testnet, marking a critical milestone that transitions the protocol’s planned modifications into a live testing environment roughly one month ahead of its scheduled mainnet deployment.

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as the predetermined activation point for the NU7 upgrade—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The Zcash development team quickly confirmed the milestone through a formal announcement posted on social media platform X, assuring the broader cryptocurrency community that NU7 is now fully operational and live on the testnet.

The successful testnet deployment paves the way for developers, node operators, and validators to closely monitor the stability, performance, and security of the updated codebase under realistic network conditions. This crucial testing window allows the development community to evaluate how the new protocol parameters interact with decentralized network infrastructure before committing to a mainnet rollout.

NU7 represents the next major network upgrade for the privacy-centric cryptocurrency and introduces several structural modifications designed to enhance network performance, transaction efficiency, and long-term economic sustainability. Among the most prominent changes introduced in the NU7 upgrade is a dramatic reduction in the network’s target block spacing. The protocol reduces this metric from the legacy 75 seconds down to a significantly faster 25 seconds, a move intended to accelerate transaction confirmation times and improve the overall user experience on the Zcash network.

In addition to faster block times, the NU7 upgrade implements critical changes to transaction types and network economics. The upgrade permanently disables version 4 transactions, phasing out older protocol standards to streamline the network’s codebase and bolster long-term security. Concurrently, NU7 integrates a novel Network Sustainability Mechanism. This economic feature is designed to redirect a portion of network transaction fees directly into future block rewards, creating a continuous funding loop to support ongoing network security and development.

However, the deprecation of version 4 transactions carries significant implications for certain legacy asset holders. Because version 4 transactions are being disabled, any Zcash (ZEC) tokens currently held within the network’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless users actively migrate their funds prior to the full mainnet activation of NU7. This technical transition requires legacy holders to take proactive measures to safeguard their assets and ensure compatibility with the updated protocol.

Following the successful testnet activation, the Zcash Foundation released a statement on Friday advising testnet operators and node administrators to actively utilize the latest release candidate to test NU7 under real conditions. The foundation emphasized that this rigorous testing phase is essential for developers to thoroughly assess the upgrade’s functionality, identify any potential edge cases or bugs, and make an informed final decision regarding whether to proceed with the mainnet activation as currently scheduled.

Zcash developers are scheduled to convene for a final review meeting on Oct. 20 to evaluate the performance of NU7 on the testnet. Based on the data, stability metrics, and operational feedback gathered during this testing period, the development team will make their final decision on mainnet activation and formally lock in the exact block height for the deployment.

If the testnet evaluation proceeds without major technical hurdles, the mainnet activation for the NU7 upgrade is officially targeted for Nov. 5.
